How we made this website

Uncover our sustainable design process, detailing how we built this site with eco-friendly practices and a mindful approach to reduce our digital footprint.

Our website is hosted in Sweden

Sweden has gained recognition for its utilization of clean and renewable grid energy, emitting among the lowest grams of CO2 per kWh produced. In 2024, Sweden’s energy production averaged approximately 16-28 grams of CO2 per kWh, compared to most other countries producing 100-900 grams of CO2 per kWh. Therefore, selecting Sweden as the hosting location for our website was an unequivocal choice, aligning seamlessly with our commitment to sustainability.

Emails hosted in Sweden

Similar to our website, our emails find their home with GleSys in Sweden, ensuring they operate on one of the world’s cleanest grid-energy sources. Notably, GleSys goes the extra mile for the environment by repurposing excess heat to support the district heating system.

We are using dark mode

Currently, there are over 1 billion smartphones worldwide equipped with OLED displays. Utilizing the dark mode feature on these screens can yield remarkable benefits, potentially conserving up to 35-40% of battery life. This is primarily due to the unique characteristic of OLED displays wherein black effectively turns off each individual pixel, significantly reducing power consumption.

Using WEBP

We’ve upgraded all images on our website from their traditional JPG or PNG formats to the more advanced WEBP version. During this transformation, we’ve implemented additional compression techniques to further reduce the file sizes, ensuring optimized image quality and faster loading times across our site.

Reduce the number of font types

To minimize the overall page weight, we’ve made a conscious effort to limit the use of custom fonts. Recognizing their impact on load times, we’ve opted to employ a minimal selection of custom fonts, prioritizing a lighter and more efficient web experience.

Reduce the number of images

As images significantly contribute to heavier webpage loads, we’ve adopted a selective approach by removing images that aren’t directly related to or crucial for comprehending the content. To put it into perspective, approximately 150,000 words in plain text occupy the same space as a single image. Hence, we prioritize the use of images only when they provide substantial value or greatly enhance the content.

Using lightest image form

Prior to integrating an image into a page, we thoroughly assess if an alternate format would offer improved quality and reduced file size. Occasionally, SVG images provide sharper visuals while maintaining a lighter footprint compared to formats like JPG and PNG, offering an optimal balance between clarity and file efficiency.

Page weight budgets

We meticulously evaluate the importance and utility of every page across our website. Subsequently, we establish a page weight budget tailored to each page’s requirements, which serves as a guiding framework for both designers and developers. Sticking to this shared page weight budget helps us team up and work together! It lets us join forces to trim down page sizes and speed things up for everyone.

Scalable server

We’re using a scalable server to host our website, and we regularly monitoring its performance to optimize resource utilization, including CPU and RAM. This proactive approach ensures we’re maximizing its capacity effectively.

No tracking scripts

Third-party tracking scripts can significantly increase the load on your website. Each time one of these scripts is activated, it initiates a chain reaction that consumes energy across various locations, depending on the hosting of these third-party tools. We believe in respecting your privacy and understand that you don’t need every click or view on our website monitored. As a result, we’ve chosen to remove all third-party trackers for a more streamlined and private browsing experience.

No autoplay videos

Videos can consume substantial data and energy. To minimize both, we’ve made the decision to prevent videos from autoplaying on our website. This intentional approach aims to reduce unnecessary data usage and lower energy consumption for a more efficient browsing experience.

Follow accessibility standards

We’re dedicated to making the internet accessible to everyone, regardless of their abilities or where they are. That’s why we stick to international accessibility standards on our website, so everyone can have a great experience.

Measure our footprint

We frequently assess the weight of our web pages to continuously enhance their performance and keep them lightweight. We firmly believe that sustainability is an ongoing effort, not a one-time task.

WOFF2 fonts

Custom fonts are part of our website’s style, yet rather than opting for heavier formats like TTF and OTF, we’ve opted for the lightest and most modern format available: WOFF2.
